The Out Cry by Crockett Mitchell & Lancaster

Byard Lancaster’s The Out Cry is a showcase for Mr. Lancaster’s prodigious talent for composition and his remarkable wizardry on the reeds and flute. More than half the compositions on this CD are Byard’s, along with tracks such as "Oleo" by Sonny Rollins and "MR. P.C." by John Coltrane. The second track on the CD, "Primitive Sacrifice," is an epic piece of slightly over seventeen minutes of great music featuring Byard on the flute. Another composition of note is "Love Kathy," which is a slow tempo piece written by Byard and Kathy Kilpatrick. This piece, featuring Kathy on the bassoon, exudes an intense intimacy and warmth and is my favorite track on the album. The CD ends with "The Outcry," another Byard Lancaster composition with Byard on the saxophone. Edward Crockett and J.R. Mitchell were excellent on the bass and drums respectively. The great jazz city of Philadelphia should be proud to have an artist such as Byard Lancaster as a musical legend in their midst.
