Ex-Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper has led an active and largely fruitful career via an assortment of group-based projects and solo outings. However, this CD co-featuring lyricist/vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Julian Whitfield amid various guest artists, represents something a bit out of the norm for the legendary bassist. On this production, the duo merges progressive rock with turntable scratches, vocals, recitations, loops, horns, and ethereal treatments.
Highlights include, a medium tempo blues number titled "Got Something," featuring Alan Clarke performing on harmonica. Here, Whitfield’s deadpan vocalizations cast a contrasting edge, amid distortion laden guitars, heavy bass, and other subtly conveyed delicacies. Other pieces consist of ostinato bass lines, airy dreamscapes, and female vocalists providing the background choruses. The recording surfaces as a pet project of sorts, yet it’s a fun-filled outing, shaded with the musicians blithe demeanor and tight-knit ensemble work.
