One Night In Vermont by Ted Rosenthal / Bob Brookmeyer

Call this the Rebirth of the Cool, or Vermont: The No-Wait Duo State -- One Night In Vermont is a cross-generational meeting between ace mainstream-style pianist Ted Rosenthal (younger dude) and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer (the vet, and both gents have played with Cool School avatar Gerry Mulligan), who stretch out on some exceedingly familiar standards ("Embraceable You," "What's New" -- not the song selection, apparently) and remake them in their own dual-images. Brookmeyer has a wide, wry, deep-breathy, punchy tone, and Rosenthal is bright, unabashedly sentimental, and carefully weighs and places each note in a manner that's totally au naturale -- he's a modernist (though not tres avant) in old-school (think Roger Kellaway, Teddy Wilson) clothing. Together, they're a mini-chamber orchestra loaded with élan, wit, and invention. While One Night... isn't stop-the-presses stuff, it's well worth being sought-out by those valuing the Art of the Duo.
