Violinist Mark Cargill's new CD titled "YOUR LOVE" is OFF THE HOOK!!! Fresh, classy AND Soulful.
Just mesmerizing, to say the very least! Just plug it in, put on the headphones or in the car, and close your eyes (unless you are doing the driving!). There is a particular track called "Ramsey" that just floored all who have been fortunate enough to hear it. Just NASTY TUFF! "Ramsey" is 'Hot Single' releasable, in my humble opinion. The grooves are totally infectious with a killer bass hook that grabs you and holds on tight. Shades of Jean Luc Ponty/Noel Pointer dead on the Acid Jazz/Classic Soul tip. And the string overdub/voice fills in the last third of the track are breathtaking and mesmerizing. This is VERY fresh and tasty music.
Several of the core musicians on this recording are from a group Mark assembled 22 years ago known as THE SUNLIGHT ORCHESTRA (Mark Cargill, ‘Slam’, Cheryl McDowell, David Jackson and John Hart). Other musicians are members of THRILL, a superb LA/South Bay Jazz/R&B conglomerate of which Cargill is also a key member. The guest musicians such as Gary Byas, Gerald Albright, and Eddie Miller all get real soulful on selected tracks.
In addition, Thrill nucleus member guitarist Tony Drake puts down some superb (he always is) licks in just the right spots and co-Producer/Keyboardist Greg "Captain" Cook, commanding a battery of keyboards has never sounded better, rapidly carving out a unique solo voice for himself more and more. Drummer extraordinaire Larry Washington just kicks the toms "Pretty Purdy" style-he just plays on automatic like that. Vibe player ‘Slam’ does the tasty vibe thing with tone and space. He's not out front but you can hear him melodically filling in where it counts. And stank nasty Thrill bassist J.V. (Jevonny) Collier puts the "in yo' face" bottom end and pulls the elements all together in perfect taste. Other guest artists include legendary Jazz/R&B percussionist Munyungo Jackson, who adds rhythm colors in all the right spots.
And for vocal lovers who prefer that human voice to instrument contrast, there are nice lead and background sounds on several tracks provided by LA singer Cheryl McDowell, featured on the original "Heaven's Design". Plus, our very own beloved Lisa Gay (lead vocalist for Lisa Gay & Thrill) herself guests doing background vocals on "Bennie & The Jets" and "For The Love Of You".
But it's Mark's show to the bone, and I have never heard an electric violinist play with such fire, sensitivity, passion, and pure emotion with a big chunk of Blusey soulfulness. Yet his Classical roots are evident if you really listen closely. This guy’s got a sonic "Felix The Cat" bag of tricks that will astound your ears. He soars occasionally into the stratosphere, often sounding like a banshee (or a Fender Stratocaster) but gives you just a taste and leaves you ears begging for more. He is in total command of his instrument. And there is no one else out there on the current music scene that can touch him with his high level of technical playing. No one. The field is wide open and it is now his to conquer.
Other standout tracks include unique covers of the Isleys' timeless "For The Love Of You" and another Marvin' classic, "What's Goin’ On". The originals are impressive also, especially including the title track "Your Love" and the aforementioned "Ramsey".
A simply INCREDIBLE first solo effort by Mark and this all-star array of first-rate musicians.
The entire CD is excellent for cruising or kicking back with a taste (check out the haunting and serene "Symphony Of Love" featuring veteran Gerald Albright on also sax), or even some foot stomping, especially on the infectious slammin’ groove original "Ramsey", or the totally smokin’ Marvin Gaye funk dance classic, "Got To Give It Up".
It is available NOW thru Lisa's website until Mark's new site is up and running, which is in the works!
If you really dig some precision yet Soulful Smooth and Classy Jazz/R&B with a sweet taste of Groovalicious Funk, you HAVE to add this to your collection. It never gets old after repeat plays-your ears will find something new every time it’s played.
We like to think of this music as NEW SONIC DIRECTIONS IN ELEGANT JAZZ AND SOUL.
