Go Forth Duck by Paul Dunmall - Paul Rogers - Kevin Norton

Drummer/percussionist Kevin Norton aligns with two British improvising heavyweights on this most interesting trio date. Briefly, there’s a tremendous amount of synergy and chutzpah displayed throughout the various ebbs, flows, and swirling clusters of sound.

Bassist Paul Rogers primarily employs a bowed delivery, via circular patterns and polytonal lines. On the thirty-eight minute opener "Go Forth Duck," Norton’s delicate vibes work sets a tone for the group’s sprawling harmonic inventions. Whereas, Paul Dunmall eventually launches into a frenzied soprano sax attack, amid an assortment of ethereal dialogues sprinkled into these three lengthy works.

Dunmall once again surfaces as a master of the jazz bagpipes on "I Am Not A Van," while also transmitting his signature style brawn, and power, especially when performing on tenor sax. Overall, Norton toggles between his drum kit and vibes while also using small percussion instruments for shade and accenting purposes. But it’s the musicians’ vibrantly conveyed camaraderie that shines in glittering colors. Simply stated, they were up for the occasion, and it shows - rather passionately, that is. (Recommended.... )
