Public by Greg Osby

Alto saxophonist Greg Osby shoots bullets throughout this generally, hard-hitting live date, recorded at Jazz Standard in New York City. As Osby and trumpeter Nicholas Payton tear it up on their extended jam-based rendition of Dizzy Gillespie’s bop classic, "Shaw Nuff." Whereas, the saxophonist executes a Thelonious Monk type bop vibe amid brisk flurries and diminutive phrasings on the opening track titled "Rising Sign."

Young Japanese pianist Megumi Tonezawa renders a series of dark tonalities and counterbalancing voicings in spots, although a few of his solos are a bit tentative and nebulous in scope. Yet, a minor beef, as he often gels with the rhythm section, via an air of dynamism and cleverly articulated chord-based structures. Vocalist Joan Osborne steps in with the band for a gorgeous rendition of "Lover Man." To that end, Osby is the star of the show during this straightforward live set, featuring a nicely blended set list and zinging performances by all parties.
