Assembling a collection of his original compositions, adding a couple standards, then tossing in a Steely Dan original, Connerley has created a dynamic and energetic straight-ahead piece of art with Vanessa’s Song.
In a tribute to Wayne Shorter, Gallaher wrote Sort-of-Shorter,
allowing this sax man a full run of the scale, slowly and gently caressing each note, accompanied by keyboardist Jim Connerly and a deep dip on bass by Jim Anderson.
Title track, Vanessa’s Song,
was written for Gallaher’s wife, reflecting an up-tempo, spirited personality. Again blowing full range on sax, this time Gallaher’s bassist peps up his strings, keeping time with the stiletto strokes on piano. Franklin does a romping solo on drums.
A little more sultry, Beatrice
gives a deeper tone to Gallaher’s sax before coming back with Steely Dan’s Razor Boy,
with a new arrangement adding a little diversion to this classic tune.Elvin’s Lighthouse
was written by Gallaher for Elvin Jones, who gave Gallaher inspiration with his album, Live at the Lighthouse.
A little tweaking brought this track into focus for the band as they gingerly perform Elvin’s Lighthouse
. Connerley takes a full run across the keyboard, perfectly matched by Franklin’s hot drum roll in a frantic extended solo.
A fine piano lead opens May’s Muse,
later joined by Gallaher’s sultry sax on a slow tour into the mysterious night.
seems an appropriate closure to an album giving tribute to such major players.
Influenced by Coltrane, Davis, Monk, Shorter and Steely Dan, Brent Gallaher has a well-rounded repertoire bringing a classy touch to the jazz scene.
