If you know anything about vocalist Brenda Russell, one thing is apparent about her. She is one of the most versatile musical artists of her generation. She has the ability to weave a web of soothing lyrical interpretations that transcends the norm of most of her contempories. She has either worked with or has been actively involved with such notable artists as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Herb Alpert, Leon Russell, Stevie Wonder, Will Downing and a host of others. With Stevie, she co-wrote the tune "Justice of the Heart," a song written for Denzel Washington's movie 'John Q.' Brenda is even involved with co-writing music for the new Broadway production of Alice Walker's book 'The Color Purple.' With so much of her talent devoted to numerous pursuits above and beyond her own individual work, where does she find the time to record a solo album? With that being asked, she has been able to do exactly that with a new release entitled 'Between The Sun and The Moon' for Narada Jazz.
After a four-year hiatus, Brenda Russell has recorded twelve delightful tracks of beautifully written originals and covers. With collaborative assistance from Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick of Incognito, Lee Ritenour, as well as Patti Austin, Brenda has woven a tapestry of uptempo grooves and mesmerizing melodic ballads. 'Between The Sun and The Moon' goes full-circle in bringing together the dynamics of R&B, Latin, pop and original verses. On Smokey Robinson and The Miracles' hit tune "The Tracks of My Tears," she hit the nail on the head with her own level of sensitivity and reverence. One of the more tantalizing tracks on the CD entitled "Too Cool For The Room," she has penned an upbeat groove that has her candy-coated trademark voice stamped all over it. Overall, all the tracks attached to this latest offering are designed to embellish the rhythms of the heart, while the preponderance of thought takes root. Brenda carries her listeners on a musical journey that satisfies all the requirements of a quality sounding vocal CD.
