The latest offering from this largely, inventive modern/free-jazz power trio features dabs of thrusting like, mayhem and pulsating grooves. Once again, the trio intertwines acoustic instruments and electronics for an unwieldy foray into avant territory, spiced with enigmatic dialogues and a focused line of attack. Here, the reeds, cello and drums format provides the knockout punch, all presented by the trio’s purveyance of metallic overtones, inventive rhythmic forays and more. They’ve been around for several years, yet each subsequent production reveals newfound treats and digressions. For example, the piece titled "The Burning Tongue," is partly about steely edged cello lines executed with clanging, hard rock style underpinnings. As multi-reedman Hans Koch supplements matters with free-form excursions. But the group shows a quieter side in spots via spooked out, ethereal frameworks. Other pieces highlight, drummer Fredy Studer’s abstract jungle jams, amid Martin Schutz’ distorted, fuzz-drenched cello lines. (Recommended.... )
