From Sue With Love by Sue Giles

New York vocalist, Sue Giles introduced her first CD late last summer and a copy landed on my desk recently.

From Sue With Love starts off with an original piece by Sue’s guest pianist David Durrah and titled All We Need. Giles handles the impressive lyrics with emotion and ease. Sarah Vaughan’s sensitive ballad style immediately springs to mind. The Brooklyn native follows up with Felicidad by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jerome Kern’s The Song Is You. Both pieces exhibit the vocalist’s capability to swing confidently while allowing some colorful licks by Harry Whitaker and Joe Magnarelli.

Sue Giles delivers the finest version of Shiny Stockings since Ella herself. The listener can’t help but be reminded of jazzdom’s First Lady.

The young vocalist does a great job with the works of the major composers but I fell in love with the original tunes by David Durrah, Harry Whitaker, Joe Magnarelli and Sue Giles. These songs don’t really take a backseat to anything.

Sue Giles can be seen at her regular gig in Brooklyn at The Williamsburg Café. Sound samples are available at the singer’s website. She's just gained another fan!
