I like the track Confessions Of A Liar
. Guitarist Doug Munro and trumpeter Ray Vega bring this bossa nova track and album up to par to what is out there today and with this album lead it and us forward into the future.A Song For Sonny
is dedicated to Sonny Rollins. Drummer Rick Morales plays his best on this track adding in fills that without those this track would not work. Great whistles as well!.
There are two cover versions on the album that one would not expect to be on a bossa nova album or even by jazz purists in general: We have a cover of War's 1975 hit Low Rider
and back to the Miles Davis catalogue for Milestones
. Munro and company have brought a fresh look on Low Rider
and for a 'bossa nova' feel it works. Milestones
stays close to the original arrangement but Doug and company bring it together with new life, its as almost what Miles would sound like if it was bossa nova. Sometimes You Just Have To Sneak Around
is a piece for Ray Vega. He plays trumpet on this that is meaningful and that is tight but loose, say a more melodic Miles would be a fair value.
Overall this album is an excellent album. Doug Munro and company have put out a bossa nova album without it being too 'bossa nova'
. The covers work on here, again straying outside the jazz idiom for Low Rider
is refreshing, great to see, not just dipping into the Jobim catalogue to rework something that may have been reworked a few times before. Standout tracks on this one are 'Confessions Of A Liar, A Song For Sonny, Low Rider and The Girl With The Long Tassled Hair
