Fiery beats with the energy most musicians only fantasize about, Poncho Sanchez again conveys a strong addition to his twenty plus year gift to jazz. Do It just does it for fans of Latin jazz. From the first detonation of this project the ride hits warp speed with the flair of the signature conga drum to the eclectic resonance of style. Do It addresses numerous tastes from soul, R&B to funk with the finesse only Sanchez can ink on a music sheet.
Along with Sanchez, Tower of Power and Hugh Masekela team up to add another level to the Sanchez design. The brass just penetrates through the speakers with such dynamic energy, complimenting the conga magic. This is by far an exceptional effort from Sanchez. Defining the free spirit in sound as Sanchez surely calculated.
Title cut "Do It" exhibits a multi-directional exercise in jazz musicology. So precise but diverse are the arrangements, its hard to fathom the thought process of the mind that fashioned it. The outtake sounds with the brass tailing off after an avalanche of varied reverberation is so exciting to experience as a listener.
Tower of Power assists in taking us into "Shotgun Slim," a very slick composition. Incorporated is a steady dose of brass with that percussion backdrop which adds real flavor to this piece. Added are a few well-placed horn solos that inject another dimension in sound.
Latin jazz has been so blessed by the appearance of Mr. Sanchez but more so the entire music industry. His innovative and explosive sounds just add new inroads for all who dare to examine their future in music. Every new jewel box Sanchez burns becomes a new level of listening for all.
Not to be so clicheesque, just Do It!
