In 2005, The DIVA Jazz Orchestra detonated a brilliant effort of pure untarnished swing as they released TNT - A Tommy Newsom Tribute
from Diva Jazz Lightyear. With all the romance, panache, and sounds a true big band embraces, bandleader Sherrie Maricle has taken the arrangements of Tommy Newsom and rejuvenated the magic. A stunning piece of music that will stand the test of spins!
The DIVA Jazz Orchestra is a cavalcade of accolade coated all-female talent along with many surprises including one Karolina Strassmayer, saxophonist, who I had the pleasure of interviewing years back on her debut "Klaro." These are quality musicians who, combined, bring the true sound of the big band appeal to the forefront with respect. In many ways this project brings back the allure of a ballroom in full swing!
"Red Door," a Sims and Mulligan piece, is crisp, energetic, and includes smooth sax injections. It is, at times, heated and seemingly ready to unhinge the precise arrangements, which keep this machine on track!
Opening this dynamic disk is a Newsom arrangement that defines big band called "Titter Pipes," and it is a total burst of brass energy. Ms. Maricle’s drums push the pace forward into a collision course of swing perfection. Note the complexity of sound and the direction in which this piece goes. A stunning work of jazz!
Sherrie Maricle at the helm of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra is a relationship that is sure to flourish and entertain on many stages to come. This disc delivers memories, moments, and, more important, musicianship seldom revisited. A triumph!
