"This anthology reveals strong stylistic connections to the players that surfaced during the 90's," writes Chicago Reader columnist Peter Margasak in the disc's liner notes, "but despite certain similarities this music doesn't seek to replicate Chicago's recent past. There's a new dedication to using composition as something more than a launch pad for improvisation-although you'll find improvisation on everything here. Only time will tell if these musicians become the bedrock of Chicago jazz in the first decade of the new century, but the future looks bright."
Document Chicago features some Chicago-born ensembles that have previously recorded for 482 Music, including The Treehouse Project, Sticks & Stones, and Jason Roebke's Rapid Croche, while it also foreshadows future releases. Tenor saxophonist Matt Bauder will release his debut, Weary Already of the Way (482-1025), on October 28th and GreyGhost's How to Create Words (482-1022) will follow November 25th. The other musicians represented on the compilation are The Pavkovic Band, Dragons 1976, Triage, The Exciting Trio, Jason Adasiewicz/Jon Doyle, Phil Mosberg/Eric Roth Duo, Design Flaw, Bauder/Parker/Ajemian, and Bauder/Ramsdell/Bryerton.
