Back By Popular Demand...

George V Johnson Jr returns for one night at Kelly's Ellis Island Restaurant & Pub. A newly jazz oriented club located near Catholic University of America and features a great ambiance and a wide variety of good cooking.

Having performed with James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Arnold Sterling, David 'Fathead' Newman, the talented vocalist seemed to found his niche after relocating back to his hometown Washington DC. While dinning in a local restaurant one evening listening to WPFW, I was moved by his lyrics to Hank Mobley's signature recording "This I Dig of You" aka "I Paid My Dues". I found myself in awe the announcer spinned several of his cuts from the Live @ Jazz Inn CD recorded in Albuquerque NM with a host of New Mexican musicans.

This is definitely one of his best recordings yet, featuring original lyrics to David Newman's signature recording "Hard Times" and tenor man Doug Lawrence's "Tommie & Tilly" a song dedicated to his mom and dad. Lawrence served as music director and currently plays with the Count Basie Band.

A student and descendant of the late Eddie Jefferson "Next In Line" he continues keeping the Legacy of the vocalist master and mentor both interesting and unique. Last semester Johnson was recruited to teach master classes to the vocal ensemble at American University. A situation that's a proves that years of hard work and dedication pays off when you pursue your dreams.

For the past few years Johnson has been working hand in hand on his Hank Mobley project with arranger and producer of Second Floor Music Don Sickler. Sickler has written the arrangements and plans to produce and record the CD within the next year at Rudy Van Gelder's studio. The studio where Hank Mobley himself recorded many of his Blue Note classics. Johnson has penned lyrics to over 40 of Hank's compositions including: Hank's Symphony, Soul Station, Dig Dis, No Room For Squares, East of The Village, This I Dig of You, Take Your Pick, Three Way Split, Split Feelings, Up A Step, Work Out, The Baptist Beat, My Groove Your Move, Soft Impressions, Hank's Waltz, Chain Reaction, Roll Call, Syrup & Biscuits, Snappin Out, Comin' Back, The Feelings Good, Uh Huh, Up Over and Out, Looking East, Cute N' Pretty, Third Time Around, Bossa For Baby, Ballin, Madeline, No More Goodbyes, The Break Through, Hank's Other Bag, Infra Rae, Straight NoFilter, the Moring After and more...

Stay tune Mobley fans looks like Johnson is about to finally make one of the greatest contributions to "THE ART OF VOCALESE". His group includes Bob Butta-piano, James King-bass, Lenny Robinson-drums.
