Ballard Jazz Festival (Seattle, WA)

On Saturday, November 15, 2003, Ballard will come alive with music and art as Origin Records and the Ballard Chamber of Commerce present the First Annual Ballard Jazz Festival.

Utilizing the ever-hip, Greenwich Village atmosphere of historic Ballard Avenue and the artistic sophistication of Mars Hill’s performance hall, the festival will feature dynamic and noted members of the national & Northwest jazz scenes.

The evening concert takes advantage of the warm performance environment and state-of-the-art sound system in Mars Hill to feature renowned New York drummer Brian Blade (Joshua Redman, Joni Mitchell, Seal, Wayne Shorter) and his group, The Brian Blade Fellowship. Dubbed "the greatest living jazz singer" by Herb Ellis, Portland’s Nancy King combines with pianist Steve Christofferson for what will prove to be an intimate and witty set. Closing the concert will be the most recorded saxophonist in history, Los Angeles-based Ernie Watts performing with Seattle’s award-winning New Stories Trio.

Starting at 9:30, jazz will take over the clubs of historic Ballard Avenue for a Jazz Walk featuring performances by some of the Northwest's premier artists including Matt Jorgensen + 451, John Stowell, Ben Thomas, and many others.

A great opportunity to mingle and learn from these artists will be provided during early afternoon workshops at the Mars Hill facility, followed by food, drink and performances by some top Seattle area high school bands.

This is a truly unique and exciting event for the Northwest and Ballard Communities.
