TO BE HONORED AS A NATIONAL ‘FATHER OF THE YEAR’ AT NYC LUNCHEON

NEW YORK, May 27, 2004 - - Renowned musician and music educator Ellis Marsalis, father of six sons including jazz notables Wynton and Branford Marsalis, will be among a group of five notable dads who will be honored as 2004 Fathers of the Year at the National Father’s Day Committee’s 63rd Annual Awards Luncheon on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Sheraton New York Hotel in Manhattan.

Wynton Marsalis was named Artistic Director of Jazz at NYC’s Lincoln Center earlier this month. The other four honorees are General Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Richard Petty, arguably the greatest stock car driver in history; Isiah Thomas, ranked among the NBA’s All-Time Top 50 players; and Baseball Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to The Education Center For Prostate Cancer Patients, a Long Island-based, non-profit organization that provides important, objective and accurate information to patients and their families. Father of the Year honorees are chosen by the National Father’s Day Committee from nominees representing a wide variety of backgrounds and careers who have demonstrated strong adherence to such important human values as family, citizenship, charity, civility, responsibility and reverence.

Brian Williams of NBC-TV, a 1996 Father of the Year, will serve as emcee of the Luncheon; while 2000 Father of the Year Bill Boggs will moderate the day’s Press Conference. The six sons of Ellis and Dolores Marsalis are Branford, Wynton, Ellis III, Delfeayo, Mboya and Jason.

The National Father’s Day Committee is a not-for-profit, non-commercial organization that strives to heighten the meaning and observance of Father’s Day, raise funds for philanthropic purposes and present "Father of the Year" Awards to deserving fathers of high accomplishment in their chosen fields who have also exhibited enormous achievement as parents.

Past Father of the Year Award recipients from the world of music include Benny Goodman, "Doc" Severinsen, Robert Merrill, Burt Bacharach, Gregory Hines, Perry Como and Irving Berlin For reservations or to contact the National Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council, call 212/594-5977.
