In a Voice of Her Own

After many years as a side-person, vocalist/pianist, Mala Waldron is taking center stage leading a quartet at Kavehaz in the village on Halloween night. Previously she headlined with her father, pianist/composer, Mal Waldron, when they recorded "He's My Father" in 1995 on the Tokuma Communications label. The duo promoted this CD with a series of promotional tours in Japan. The same label released Mala's own debut CD, "Lullabye," the following year.

In this upcoming performance, Mala's band will be showcasing her original compositions, some of which have never been released on CD. Joining her will be Stephen Salerno on guitar, Miriam Sullivan on bass and Michael Thompson on drums. They will also be playing her arrangements of jazz standards and other favorite tunes.

As far as what to expect -- the group is grounded in traditional jazz styles, with a distinct funk/r&b flavor that is evident in much of what they do. It makes for an interesting blend of old and new. What stands out is that this group obviously loves what they're doing. The good feelings they generate on stage are highly infectious, so if you have the opportunity to catch the Mala Waldron Band at Kavehaz (123 Mercer St.) on October 31, 2002 (9PM), expect to enjoy yourself. There's no cover and an $8 food/drink minimum.
