John Pizzarelli to perform at Pierce College

2001 Pierce College Jazz Expo to feature The John Pizzarelli Trio

The Pierce College Jazz Expo for 2001 will welcome The John Pizzarelli Trio at 8 p.m, Nov. 16, fresh off a five-day gig at the fabled Birdland in New York City. The evening's entertainment will also includeperformances by Pierce College's award-winning jazz vocal group, Farwest Jazz. The combo's performance will be the centerpiece of an annual high school jazz festival sponsored by the Pierce College musicdepartment. The performance will be at the Wilson High School auditorium,1202 N, Orchard St., Tacoma. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling (253) 964-6283 or Ticketmaster outlets.The John Pizzarelli Trio includes guitar and vocals by John Pizzarelli, a classic singer in the tradition of Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole and a guitarist in a league with Les Paul. His repertoire includes classics ofjazz, swing and musicals as well as original material. The son of jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, John is joined by his younger brother Martin on bass and Ray Kennedy on keyboard. With some 18 discs to his credit, Pizzarelli was voted 1999's Jazz Vocalist of the Year by Swing Journal readers, the same year he joined the Seattle Symphony in its holiday concert series.
