Playscape Announces Three New December 2003 Releases

LONGMEADOW, MA -- Playscape Recordings is proud to announce the December 2nd release of its three newest titles: Armen Donelian's Quartet Language, Michael Musillami's Those Times, and George Schuller's Round'bout Now. These new recordings, which follow Mario Pavone's Orange released in October, are distributed by North Country (USA), IRD (Italy), Super Stop, Inc. (Japan) and Verge (Canada). Playscape titles are also available through Tower Records, amazon.com, jazzloft.com, and direct from the label at http://www.playscape-recordings.com.

Armen Donelian Quartet Language (PSR#050292)
Armen Donelian, piano/composer; Thomas Chapin, alto saxophone; Calvin Hill, bass; Jeff Williams, drums

Dedicated to the late Thomas Chapin, Quartet Language presents this quartet's May 1992 two-night stand at New York's Visiones as it happened, with only minor editing for sequencing and track length. Available now for the first time, this recording is one of the only live documents of both Chapin's sideman work during his prime and the pianist/composer the All Music Guide called "a superb artisan."

Michael Musillami Those Times (PSR#012603)
Michael Musillami, guitar/composer; Ted Rosenthal, piano; Dave Shapiro, bass; George Schuller, drums

In a recent live review, the Brattleboro Reformer called Musillami's quartet "four players who possess prodigious, virtuoso talent, with credits that rank them as jazz luminaries." The reviewer went on to write, "But what left the biggest impression on me, anyway, was the performers' mastery of the subtler challenges of interplay and dialogue."

George Schuller Round'bout Now (PSR#021302)
George Schuller, drums and percussion/composer; Donny McCaslin, soprano/tenor saxophones and alto flute; Ingrid Jensen, trumpet and flugelhorn; Tom Beckham, vibes/composer; Dave Ambrosio, bass; with special guests: Matt Darriau, kaval and bass clarinet; Pete McCann, guitar; and Sonny Barbato, accordion.

After four years of regular live performances around New York, the George Schuller Quintet, formerly known as Chump Change, makes its recorded debut, documenting what AllAboutJazz calls their "rigorous, unpredictable approach to group improvisation." Like his other groups, Orange Then Blue and The Schulldogs, Schuller's quintet showcases his ability to create innovative, inclusive compositions/arrangements that provide the ideal framework for the improvisational abilities of his talented collaborators.
