Tango Jazz Concert

This evening Buenos Aires native Katie Viqueira is back at the R-bar for a night of "CanTango," her unique vocal blend of passionate Tangos, Candombes, Milongas and Chacareras. Assisted by pianist and musical director Nando Michelin, drummer Bertram Lehmann, bassist Fernando Huergo, and special guest violinist Laura Arpiainen, she sets out to trace her musical roots "without sensationalism, without fake emotionality, but with just the right amount of passion and highly sophisticated arrangements" (Jazzpodium).

Recently billed "a hot Tango star" by the Boston Globe, Mrs. Viqueira received highest critical accolades for her performance in last year’s U.S. premiere of Astor Piazolla’s Tango-oratory "Pueblo Joven" at Town Hall, New York.

This evening’s guest violinist Laura Arpiainen is a New York-based graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, and has appeared internationally with leading conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Charles Dutoit, as well as jazz legend Charlie Haden.

Mrs. Viqueira will be performing music from her most recent CD El Otro Lado/The Other Side, which offers a fresh approach to well-known Tangos classics of the past, reinterpretations of ‘Nuevo Tango’ masters such as Astor Piazzolla, as well as premiering original compositions by some of Argentina’s best contemporary Tango composers and by musical director Nando Michelin

For many years, Katie Viqueira has delighted audiences in Latin America, Europe and the U.S. She has recently performed at various venues in New England area such as Ryles, Johnny D’s, the Providence Waterfront Festival, the Jorge Hernandez Cultural Center, The Peabody Museum, Berklee College of Music, and Tufts University. She has also been active in New York City with appearances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Knitting Factory, and was recently featured as soloist in the U.S. premiere of Astor Piazolla’s Tango-oratory "Pueblo Joven" at Town Hall, receiving highest accolades for her performance with the Cosmopolitan Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Pablo Zinger, as well as on a current CD release by Mr. Zinger’s own award-winning group Triangulo.
