The Jazz Discography
By Tom Lord

Publication of Volume 26 completes the series from A to Z.

The 26th volume of The Jazz Discography has been published, completing 14 years of painstaking work by its compiler and publisher, Tom Lord.

Publication of the widely acclaimed jazz reference work began in 1992 and now catalogs over 100 years of recorded jazz from 1896 to today. It currently comprises 26 volumes of over 600 pages each.

Compiled on an advanced, custom designed database, The Jazz Discography is the world’s most comprehensive source of information on recorded jazz. It includes data on 136,263 recording sessions, covers 24,351 band-leaders and lists over 1.5 million musician and tune entries.

The complete work, covering leaders from A Z will soon be made widely available on CD-ROM in Version 3.3 of the format. Publication is scheduled for first quarter of 2002. Unlike earlier CD-ROMs whose sale was restricted to full-series book purchasers, the upcoming version will be available to all jazz fans.

Volume 26 covers leaders from Jens Winther to Zzebra and is available exclusively from the publisher, Lord Music Reference Inc. by fax, mail, email or through their web site at

Also in 2002, Lord Music Reference Inc. plans to begin publishing musicians and tunes indexes plus a series of addendum volumes. These will update previously published volumes with new and revised data collected and compiled since their publication.

The Jazz Discography has been widely acclaimed by jazz critics around the world for its completeness and accuracy. However, compiler and publisher, Tom Lord, is the first to admit that all jazz discography remains a work in progress. "We do our utmost to ensure accuracy and completeness, but it’s a difficult task. We now have hundreds of contributors around the world helping us with omissions and corrections, all of which are faithfully entered into our database so that new and updated data can be made available in future books and CD-ROMs".
