Beverly Glover, former television personality and chair of the 21st annual Charlie Christian International Jazz Festival, said, "This year's event will be a scintillating experience for music lovers of all kinds! You don’t have to be a jazz fan to enjoy this festival." According to Ms. Glover, the festival will present a splendid combination of fresh faces and familiar favorites. The festival begins with a live Jam Session at Club Spyce in Bricktown where musicians can bring their instruments and sit in with Lonnie Easter and Friends on Tuesday, June 6th. Oklahoma Saxophonist, Grady Nichols will square off with Texas Saxophonist, Tom Braxton on Thursday, June 8th in The "Battle of the Bands" -- the hottest musical rivalry around. This contest will be held at Bricktown Brewery, scene of the memorable 2005 duel. One jazz aficionado from last year’s "standing room only" event said it was the second best concert he had ever attended...second only to George Benson.
The centerpiece of the festival will be the Jazz Explosion on Friday evening, June 9th featuring five-time Grammy nominee, Nnenna Freelon, at the Civic Center Music Hall. In addition, Detroit's own all-female jazz quintet, Straight Ahead, will join Freelon on stage to help send the message that women can hold their own in jazz! A local flavor will be added to the spectacular evening when Les Mannequins take the stage in the "Snazzy, Jazzy, Pizzazzy Fashion Show". The audience will be dazzled by ladies and gentlemen "strutting their stuff" in fashions that will "set us back" to a gloriously nostalgic time. "All in all, it will be a fun-filled evening of pure entertainment," Beverly stated.
The FREE weekend outdoor festival will be located in Bricktown on Oklahoma Avenue, north of Sheridan. Starting Saturday, June 10th, the lineup will include regional and local jazz and blues bands playing continuous music from noon until midnight. Popular artist Jeremy Thomas from the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab will be among Saturday’s featured performers. Headliner Butch Thompson, jazz pianist, will close out the festival on Sunday, June 11th following a gospel and jazz lineup that day.
