Mel Bay Records is pleased to announce the release of Just Friends, the first instrumental CD from Rick Haydon and John Pizzarelli, two masters of seven-string jazz guitar. Bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco joined Rick and John at Nola Recording Studios in New York City, where they captured spirited takes on "Chasin' the Blues", "Sometime Ago", "Tony's Tune" and other popular standards.
"Rick Haydon has given us a CD that not only pays tribute to the masters, but presents a great conversation between two fine guitarists. It feels good and swings hard!" - Ross Gentile, WSIE / Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville
A professional musician and educator since the 1970s, Rick Haydon has worked with an impressive list of jazz musicians, including Johnny Smith, Howard Roberts and Pat Martino. Rick performed with Herb Ellis and Mundell Lowe at the Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Convention in 1996. He joined Bucky Pizzarelli for a sold-out concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis in 1998. He was a featured guest artist with Mulgrew Miller at the 2002 Quad City Jazz Festival. In 2004 Rick performed with John Pizzarelli at the Classic American Guitar Show in Long Island, New York as part of the Jazz Cabaret Series. Rick received the Woody Herman Award from the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin in 2004. Rick is a music professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
A masterful guitarist with a smooth, engaging style, John Pizzarelli is a worthy successor to his father, jazz-guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. John lists Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra as his primary influences, and he holds a special place for the works of Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen, and George and Ira Gershwin. While playing all over the world and releasing an extensive catalog of recordings, John has also found time for film and television work, including appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Today Show, and other popular programs. A native of Paterson, New Jersey, John took up the guitar when he was six years old. He joined his father onstage at the age of 20 and began his solo career in 1982.
