Robert Hurst III, jazz bassist extraordinaire, returns triumphant to the CD scene with his newest release, Bob Ya Head, on the Bebob Records label. Joining Hurst on the 2010 release are Marcus Belgrave- trumpet, Vincent Bowens- tenor sax, Scott Kinsey- keyboards, Darryl "Munyungo" Jackson- percussion and Karriem Riggins on drums. Sy Smith’s vocals grace the album with lyrics by Robert himself. Bob Ya Head was recorded at Bebob Music Studios in Calabasas, California, Track Records Studio in North Hollywood, CA. and Studio-A Recording in Dearborn, Michigan, near where Hurst resides as an Associate Professor of Music with Tenure at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
You may recognize Robert Hurst as the bassist in the house band of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for eight seasons, from 1992 to 1999. His work in performing, directing, arranging, and composing on the NBC program were highlighted with Emmy Awards in 1995, 1996, 1997 & 1999. Hurst has performed with a truly dizzying array of acclaimed artists; from Beyonce to Barbara Streisand, from Garth Brooks and Willie Nelson to Dr. Dre, from Wynton and Branford Marsalis to John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy, from Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock to Dave Brubeck, Pharaoh Sanders, Chris Botti and Diana Krall.
In addition to composing the music on Bob Ya Head (with input on two selections by renowned percussionist Munyungo Jackson) Hurst, a six-time Grammy winner, also produced this record. Just as important to Robert as his compositional, production and playing duties is his ongoing commitment to education.
During the 80’s, Hurst’s ascension was already being tracked as a recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Presidential Scholarship Award (a coveted award recognizing the very best high school graduates in the Arts). The formally educated Hurst has been actively involved in teaching and promoting music education, entertainment industry protocol, and Jazz history fundamentals for most of his career. He has conducted multiple Master’s classes at: the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the Julliard School of Music, California State University at Northridge and the Stanford Jazz Workshop & Festival. It is obvious that Hurst loves teaching and recognizes the importance and rewards of giving back to young people. Robert works daily to convey the wisdom and life experience gleaned from a life on the road as a performer in his current post at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
