A smooth funky feel with intricate guitar work and tasty keyboards, setting the scene for one of the purest vocal sounds in the business. - (Style: Smooth Jazz)
Helios' independent debut release is treasure for those seeking substance with their melodic jazz. This thing just burns
from the moment you set it spinning -- It's masterful. Ten solid tracks featuring the talents of founders Peter Cor and Gary Carpenter. The band resides on the Santa Cruz side of the Monterey Bay. The Central Coast of California appears to becoming more and more of a hotbed for contemporary jazz artists. Keyboardist Peter Cor has spent his career
contributing to the music of Earth, Wind & Fire (he wrote "Getaway"), Tuck & Patti, and Lee Ritenour as well as writing for film and TV (Disney, Touchstone, Greg Kinnear and A&E). Guitarist Gary Carpenter's playing and writing talents have been loaned to popular San Francisco Bay Area bands ( Montaj, Sista Monica). He's also scored surfing and sports films. - smoothjazz.com - (Style: Smooth Jazz)
From guitarist Paul Hemmings' most recent release "In & Out" (Leading Tone Records), featuring Eric Alexander (ts), Miles Brown (b), Eric Wagner (dr), and Adam Issadore (perc). - (Style: Acid Jazz)
Rhodesmode is the first release in what promises to be first of many for multi-instrumentalist Perry Hemus. What rhodesmode aims to do is to provide the listener with a unique collection of jazz idiums and styles.
At first, I was taken aback with the sound, it was almost like a chill out CD but the more I listened the better it sounded. Perry seems to encapsulate the summer sound from the off. It's a blend of the most eclectic styles of music your likely to hear moving from soul, jazz to latin fusion through to ambient and deep house. It's the sort of CD that you find yourself lying in your pad thinking of sun-drenched beaches and lazy afternoons. Track 1, A closer view is 8 minutes of fender rhodes bliss and moves straight to another of the strongest tracks on the album shifting seasons which is a beautiful horn led fusion track, then the pharoah-esque Abstractions which sounds very eastern. Next up is orbiting which reminds me of spacial soul jazz from 70s. The stand out track is Rhodesmode which is a floor filling Nu-jazz track which has haunting string drenched riff running through it. The album continues to move through the gears surprising you at every turn. The emphasis of the album is not on the mix but the melding of eclectic styles. The album closes with peacemaker which leaves you with images of brasilian guitars on the sand and cool drinks under sweeping palms.
A real surprise for me but one which I'm pleased to have reviewed. This is an album that has to be discovered over 60 minutes so don't expect a quick fix as your getting ready to go out. Reserve an hour and see what I mean.

This Fred Hersch fellow has really made the rounds, aside from his many discs as a leader, he's performed with Gary Burton, Joe Henderson, Janis Siegel, Johnny Mathis (!) and Jane Ira Bloom. Here, Hersch is the leader of the pack, and boy does it sound good, maybe good enough to be a contender for one of The Best Discs of '02. This guy is unfailingly lyrical, in the manner of key-masters Hank Jones, George Cables, Tommy Flanagan, et. al., but he has a definite "modernist" [post-bop] approach. - (Style: Straight-Ahead / Classic)

"Trikke & Trakke" has a wonderful folk vibe mixing our mediterranean melodic sound with latin rythms and moods; the word Trikke & Trakke is used in the south italian dialect to indicate small fireworks but very loud lighted during the folk-festivals! - (Style: Latin Jazz / Latin Funk)
Planet in Emergency is an up-vibe, organic song about world affairs and the environment. Lots of hammond B3, a ripping sax solo, strong vocals, funky drumming with intelligent, poetic lyrics throughout. Winner of 2002 MP3 Grammy Award for Best Male vocalist in Jazz. - (Style: Acid Jazz)
The style and sound of the song "I Got To Tell You" is very Pat Metheny-esque, and if you like jazz, fusion, brazilian or plainly good guitar playing, you should check this guy out (Pat Metheny I mean, and me too of course :-)). The song is arranged and recorded in my home studio using Reason and Cubase linked via rewire, and of course my guitar. - (Style: Acid Jazz)
