Phil Stockli Quintet
Jazz saxophonist Phil Stockli has given the old classic "Body & Soul" a new face with a tricky arrangment in 15/4 time. Eventhough the melody and the harmony stay more or less the same - at least for the A section - Phil has changed the groove of the ballad and made an uplifting 6/8 type feel Latin beat. In the bridge, the band shifts into double time and the melody doesn't remind us of the original at all.
The tune also serves as a blowing vehicle for saxophonist Stockli and guitarist Mike Moreno, as well as for Bassist Matt Penman. - (Style: Contemporary Jazz)

Phil Stockli Quintet
Saxophonist Phil Stockli's "King Neptune" is basically a 3/4 jazz waltz with an energetic 7/4 interlude. The melody is beautifully arranged between alto, flute and guiar and reminds of the mysterious powers of the God of the Sea, Neptune. Drummer Jeff Ballard is the driving force behind the fiery solos of Stockli and guitarist Moreno. - (Style: Contemporary Jazz)

Phil Stockli Quintet
Jazz saxophonist Phil Stockli's "Source Nature" is an example how odd meters can be used in a composition in a very natural organic way. The tune shifts from a 7/8 to a 5/8 to a 4/4 Samba. Check out the way sax and voice complement each other in playing the melody. - (Style: Contemporary Jazz)

Phil Stockli Quintet
"Babalou" is composed by Swiss saxophonist Phil Stockli. Its instrumentation - sax backed by synth and Rhodes, on top of a guitar-bass riff, has an interesting oriental flavour. The straight groove is laid out by drummer Jeff Ballard and Bassist Matt Penman, while pianist Pete Rende impresses with his funky Rhodes. - (Style: Contemporary Jazz)

John Temmerman's Jazz Obsession Quartet
This is a thoughtful contemporary jazz piece. The "A" section is a fast modal samba; the "B" section, cut-time funk. Solos are heard from John Temmerman on tenor and Steven Hashimoto on bass. Neal Alger's guitar is heard on the tag.

The Vandermark 5
The Vandermark 5's first studio album in two years (and the first waxed with drummer Tim Daisy) further integrates and resolves the potent musical ideas & structural complexities that surfaced on their previous effort, 2001's experimental Acoustic Machine.
Superbly saturated to 2" analog by Shellac's Bob Weston (also at the helm on Spaceways Inc.'s recent Version Soul album), Airports For Light trades in a more palpable, effortless swing than past V5 efforts. Our favorite standard bearers' mastery over their own post-modern ballads has dramatically increased as well, providing a more confident command of the "quieter" moments & myriad compositional challenges. - (Style: Free Jazz / Avante Garde)

Giovanni Tommaso Quintet
And enjoyable Secondo Tempo is with Tommaso arranging all 10 cuts (over 56 minutes of music) on the CD. All 10 tracks are taken from memorable Italian films. Check out Divorzio All'Italiana (Divorce Italian Style) starting with Begonia and Lovano (trombone and sax) playing catch and return with each other. It transitions to Lovano's unique voice on the sax taking the melody while Tommaso really gets in the groove. Not to be outdone, Begonia and Farao each get a chance at the lead, and it finishes with Begonia and Lovano again playing catch and return. Il Clan dei Siciliani (The Sicilian Clan) offers Tommaso the chance to showcase his considerable strength and range on the bass. Finally, for you Godfather fans, Tommaso includes Il Padrino (the Godfather theme). An absolutely haunting rendition played with Lovano's sax imparting lots of soul. You can just here Don Corleone say " I'm going to make you an offer you cant refuse". - A. Nelson Rand - (Style: Straight-Ahead / Classic)
