Chris Bowden
|
Bowden's 1996 LP on Soul Jazz established him as a noteworthy purveyor of
"space jazz." He's made a name for himself as a composer, arranger & live
musician in the soul/acid jazz scene, working with K-Creative (Talking
Loud), Simon Richmond (Mo Wax), Jhelisa Anderson (Dorado), 4Hero, Basement
Jaxx and others. His Ninja connection came via his role in the Herbaliser
live band for the past 3 years. The 4 tracks on this "Slightly Askew" hour-
plus journey provide plenty of room to travel the vast expanses & varied
landscapes of innovative, challenging funky jazz. - (Style: Contemporary Jazz)

From the "Prospects" disc, a pasionate minor blues dedicated to Chris' childhood schoolmate and guitar soulmate who passed away before his time. From recording notes on Chris' site; "He took out this guitar and played some blues for me. It left such an impression on me that I asked him to teach me how to do it. We would jam the blues after school everyday. It kept me out of trouble. He turned me on to Jeff Beck "Wired" which contains Jeff's version of the Mingus' "Good-bye Porkpie Hat". I fashioned this song after that one as my way of thanking him". - (Style: Fusion)

A rare cut from a HAO (guitar equipment maker) CD that became sort of an underground fusion classic. Only a thousand promotional discs where manufactured and most where given away free. "Bug Lips" is an interesting song that leans more towards Chris' rock side of the fusion genre. Chris says of this song; "Sounds a little wacky." Hard to find but there are some free copies of this CD still avaliable from various sites. - (Style: Fusion)

This mp3 features one of the all time great standards, "Body and Soul." It is a tribute of sorts to Gene Bertoncini; the melody is almost always stated but reharmonized in several ways. Rather than meandering around the tune's chord changes (as many jazz solo guitar performances do) this style of playing holds the listener while the the rich, recomposed harmonies create a total web of sound. - (Style: Straight-Ahead / Classic)
