Northland Youth Music Program Summer Jazz Camp
|
The Northland Youth Music Program began in 2000 as the Duluth/Superior Area Youth Wind Band Program. The program was conceived by a group of parents and interested citizens who recognized the need for affordable high quality band programs for students in 6th through 12th grade.
By teaming up with Music educators and the University of Wisconsin Superior, the N.Y.M.P. has been able to offer a high quality summer music program at an affordable price. The University Of Wisconsin allows the N.Y.M.P. to hold the music program on the campus using the college facilities at no charge (except for the dormitories).
Summer camp students have the opportunity to play music in a variety of settings including: concert band, small ensemble, jazz big band, and jazz combo. The students play along with the instructors during the week and have one on one time with the instructors during the week.
The N.Y.M.P. provides the students a $150,000 camp for $53,000 through the help of itýs volunteer board and the contributions of private citizens, local business, music educators, the City of Superior Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin ý Superior.
The 2004 summer music program offers two weeks of concert band and two weeks of jazz band.
On Friday night of each week the program puts on a public performance. The concerts are free with goodwill donations accepted.
The 2004 tuition is $100 per week. Students may apply for tuition grants up until the beginning of the program week. By providing the summer music program, students are able to participate in a great educational experience. Students are provided a healthy outlet while being given a reason to stay on their instruments instead of turning to numerous other less positive activities. - (Style: Various Jazz Styles)
