Isthmus Jazz Festival Madison, Wisconsin June 3-4, 2005. The Isthmus Jazz Fest in Madison, Wisconsin opened its 17th season during the warm June 3-4 date, opposite it’s traditional fall timetable. The new Overture Center for the Performing Arts, designed by International architect Cesar Pelli, with the help of Flad & Associates and Potter Lawson Architects of Madison, is the new sprawling arts hub located in downtown Madison. The stunning, lofty multi-level, and luminous performing arts complex will serve the 90,000 residents and community, home of the University of Wisconsin Badgers. This year’s hot jazz festival comprised of two international artists. Spirit Music Jamia: Meshell Ndegeocello and Patricia Barber. Over 25 local jazz bands and lyricist from student to professional musicians performed. Those musicians pleased thousands over the free two-day events. You got the chance to hear and see a wide range of the jazz musicians perform different genres. Madison’s Queen of Jazz vocalist Jan Wheaton’s Quintet, big band sounds of the All-Star High School Jazz Orchestra, progressive fusion of Next Exit, and Mama Digdown’s Brass Band complete with their trademark New Orleans-style line march with audience members through the lobby and out onto State Street. Some of the workshops included a “How to Improvise” by facilitators Javon Jackson (sax) and Richard Davis (bass).
