2005 Chicago Jazz Festival (Petrillo Music Shell, Grant Park)
in on September 2, 2005
Venerable master drummer Roy Haynes, looking half his age, led his quartet in a set celebrating his 80th birthday to close the first night of the Grant Park portion of the 2005 Chicago Jazz Festival. In a nod to Roy's tenure with Charlie Parker, almost 60 years ago, they opened with "Diverse." And in a nod to his tenure with Thelonious Monk a decade later, they closed with "Green Chimneys" and "Trinkle Tinkle."
