Atlanta Jazz Festival Weekend Concert Series (Piedmont Park)
in Atlanta GA on May 27-29, 2006
A couple of piano-led trios highlighted Monday’s AJF performances. Displaying his formidable technique, the up-and-coming pianist Robert Glasper and his working group of bassist Vincente Archer and drummer Damion Reed, played all new Glasper originals in a set that started slowly and was still gaining momentum at its finish, leaving the audience wanting more. Glasper was scheduled to play with Kendrick Oliver’s New Life Orchestra Sunday but was finishing a week with this trio at NYC’s Village Vanguard.
Veteran pianist Geri Allen, with bassist Kenny Davis and legendary Miles Davis alum Jimmy Cobb were more straight ahead but just as enjoyable with their interpretation of standards and Allen originals
The festival closed with a more-jazzy-than-I-expected, crowd pleasing set by the Yellowjackets, playing many of their old favorites in a celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary, much to the delight of their many fans who made up much of th large crowd
