Featuring Gilad Atzmon presents Artie Fishel and the Promised Band
Bonington Theatre in Nottingham, UK on September 21, 2006
Gilad's latest creation is "Artie Fishel", a crazed reedsman who believes that jazz is not American or African in origin, but was invented in the ghettoes of Eastern Europe. The Promised Band set about proving this with radical re-workings of familiar jazz tunes. Imagine Spike Jones or Frank Zappa playing klezmer... Jobim's "Wave" was turned into a 7/8 uptempo jazz-fusion rave. You have to be good to do this sort of thing well, and the curly wigs couldn't disguise the high standard of musicianship on display. It's also worth mentioning the pseudonyms of the band members: pianist John Turville is "McGoy Tyner", bassist Yaron Stavi is "Jaco Pastrami" and drummer Asaf Sirkis is "Peter Foreskine".
