Bonington Theatre in Nottingham, UK on December 7, 2006
John Donaldson's trio played the opening set before Bheki Mseleku's quintet took the stage, and it was a great opportunity to see why he is the pianist of choice a number of UK band leaders such as Alan Barnes and Don Weller. There are elements of Monk and Tyner in his playing, and there was a good deal of empathy between the members of the trio. Asaf Sirkis in particular was on fine form, his playing putting me in mind of Elvin Jones.
