Derby Jazz Week (Assembly Rooms - Darwin Suite)

Promoting live jazz is almost by definition a labour of love (as Ronnie Scott used to say, "How do you make a million running a jazz club? Start with two million."), so it is a great achievement on the part of Geoff Wright and his team that they have been putting on jazz gigs in Derby for 25 years. To celebrate this, Derby Jazz Week featured a number of musicians from Derby and the surrounding area who have become leading lights on the UK scene. Pianist Tom Cawley is one of these, as is the drummer Josh Blackmore (who, at only 20 years of age, is a tremendous talent). The music is rather like EST minus the electronics, and the trio have that empathy that can make live jazz a most exhilarating experience.
