Free improvising can be a hit-and-miss affair, but when everything works it can be a fascinating experience. Zaum's concert was, as sports commentators sometimes say, "a game of two halves". The first half didn't quite gel for me, but after the interval the musicians seemed to become more attuned to each other and they produced some interesting soundscapes. The use of computer sampling and manipulation in a live context opens up a lot of possibilities. Not the usual jazz gig, then, but an admirable attempt to create something unique.
