HSBC Brecon Jazz Festival (Theatr Brycheiniog)
in Brecon, Powys, Wales on August 12, 2007
June Tabor is a singer more usually associated with folk and traditional music, but she has worked with musicians from other spheres for much of her career. Huw Warren (who has worked with June for many years) is a pianist comfortable in many genres and is a sensitive accompanist. Iain Ballamy is another musician willing to explore new musical territories; together as Quercus the trio produce music that is hard to categorise, but is quite wonderful and distinctively British, in the same way that Jan Garbarek has used his Norwegian heritage to create his own musical identity. June was having problems with her voice and had to take a few breaks, but this gave us the chance to hear Huw's gorgeous interpretation of a John Dowland tune, and duo pieces by Huw and Iain.
