Nikki Iles is a fine composer in addition to being an excellent pianist, and the band played mainly her originals, with tunes by Steve Swallow, Ralph Towner and others. It was also great to see Mike Walker in action, one of the great unsung heroes of British jazz guitar. Add to this the exquisite vocals of Norma Winstone and Mark Lockheart's muscular sax and you have a group that's amongst the best around.
