WESTCHESTER UNIVERSITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE
(Big Band)
featuring: JOHN SWANA
$20.00    Two shows: 8PM & 10PM

There are many long and rich traditions at West Chester University. Musically, The Criterions Jazz Ensemble arguably tops the charts. Students at the University first organized The Criterions as a  ballroom dance band in the roaring 20s. Since then, the group become one of the oldest continuously operating groups of its kind in  the country.

John Swana is one of the most exciting trumpeters to arrive for a decade," declares Mark Gardner, co-author of Blackwell's Guide to Recorded Jazz. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, Swana took up Trumpet at the age of 11. He was drawn to jazz at the age of 17 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie, and the interest developed into a passion while he was in college. There he began transcribing the solos of Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and Tom Harrell.

Thursday, May 15 - Sunday, May 18
CYRUS CHESTNUT
(Piano)

$25.00   Two shows: 8PM & 10PM
Cyrus Chestnut began his professional life working with such celebrated modern artists as Wynton Marsalis, but his Jelly Roll Morton influences can still be heard. That is to say that Cyrus has learned from the great jazz cats of every generation, and it really shines through in his music.  Born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 17, 1963, Cyrus Chestnut first received musical training at age 5 from his father, McDonald Chesnut. His first public performance was two years later at the Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore. He received further musical training at the Peabody Preparatory Institute where he obtained a certificate in Piano and Music theory.  Chestnut attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he graduated with a degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging. While there, he received the Eubie Blake Fellowship, the Oscar Peterson Scholarship, and the Quincy Jones Scholarship. http://www.cyruschestnut.com/
