About the Venue:
The Jazz Ministry is an outreach program of Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in New York City. It is a Christian pastoral ministry of love and celebration infused with the joyful notes of a music with deep religious roots and native to America. The Rev. Dale Lind is Saint Peter's Pastor to the Jazz Community.
The Jazz Ministry at Saint Peter's Church has been serving the jazz community since 1965, providing a home for diverse individuals and organizations to celebrate the dignity and vitality of jazz as a thriving, creative and cohesive force for spiritual nourishment and inclusive community.
The Jazz Ministry provides vibrant worship and pastoral care, and utilizes cooperative partnerships to offer jazz programs, education and services. The e-jazz community internet service was created as an extension of the Ministry, to distribute up-to-date information about jazz events held at Saint Peter's and throughout the tri-state area, and to provide a free networking service for musicians and others involved with the jazz community.
The Jazz Ministry at Saint Peter's Church was founded in 1965 by the late Reverend John Garcia Gensel who developed its most important form of worship: Jazz Vespers. Jazz Vespers is a religious service featuring a wide range of jazz styles and musicians and is held each Sunday at 5:00 PM.
The Jazz Ministry has given musicians opportunities to communicate with God through the music they feel and in an atmosphere of love, understanding and acceptance. The highly personalized pastoral services provide both emotional and spiritual support, through counseling musicians, their families and friends in homes, clubs, hospitals or wherever needed. Pastor Lind presides at marriages, baptisms, funerals and memorial celebrations of the lives of musicians.
