Event Description: Exploring traditional salsa and Cuban music, the Poncho Sanchez Latin Band made up of the conguero himself, Poncho Sanchez, as well as Scott Martin (alto & tenor saxophones, background vocals); Stan Martin (trumpet, flugelhorn); Alex Henderson (trombone); Ruben Estrada (vibraphone); David Torres (piano); Tony Banda (bass, background vocals); and Jose “Papo” Rodriguez (drums, timbales, percussion) presents a concert of vintage Latin soul and a spicy amalgam of R&B and funk. According to Jazz Times, “Sanchez plays with a simmering, persuasive subtlety on every tune, a master of contained rhythm.” The group’s tight grooves and moving syncopation pay homage to the glories of an intricate sound that can be enjoyed by all. On Wednesday, April 16, experience what many consider to be one of Los Angeles’ best-kept musical secrets when Grammy Award-winning Poncho Sanchez and his rhythmically infectious Latin jazz band electrify the University of Southern California Bovard Auditorium stage.
Artist / Group Bio: For almost two decades as leader of one of the world’s most celebrated Latin jazz bands, Concord Picante recording artist Poncho Sanchez has been an unswervingly passionate exponent of the bedrock style of Afro-Cuban Latin jazz pioneered half a century ago by such legendary musicians as Machito, Tito Puente and Dizzy Gillespie. The bearded, jovial conguero and the members of his veteran octet are virtual living symbols of the best of the modern jazz and tropical Latin traditions today. As they confidently demonstrate on their latest album, Poncho and his men are undisputed kings of a vibrant hybrid that has become one of the most dynamic and enduringly popular styles of the century.
